Barns & Yard Wedding – Emily & Dafydd

barns and yard wedding

Barns and Yard is a beautiful, luxury barn wedding venue based at Hanley Hall in Worcestershire. When Emily and Dafydd asked me to photograph their wedding there I was over the moon! I knew Emily from back when we went to school and college together but we’d lost touch when we both ventured off to university but stayed connected on Instagram. When I saw Emily got engaged to Dafydd I hoped they’d get in touch and I was really chuffed when they did! I knew their wedding was going to be a good one, I’d never shot at Barns and Yard before as it was quite a new venue but I absolutely love getting to shoot in new places and from all the photographs online it looked like a wonderful place to get married. Whenever I shoot somewhere for the first time I make sure I turn up early on the wedding day so I can have a good look round before I start shooting. This way I can get a feel for the venue and plot out places we could go later on in the day for couple portraits and group shots.

Luxury Barn Wedding Venue

Barns and Yard is such a lovely setting for a wedding venue, it’s surrounded by the Malvern Hills so there’s nothing but countryside as far as the eye can see. There are a number of areas at the venue that you can have your wedding ceremony, Emily and Dafydd opted to have theirs out in the courtyard which is beautiful. They were so lucky with the weather, if anything it was a bit too hot and Emily was a bit worried about burning! Emily and Dafydd opted to have their wedding ceremony outside in the courtyard, I always love an outdoor ceremony so if you get the weather for it I say go for it. It’s always good to have a wet weather plan just in case, Barn’s and Yard have a lovely indoor area in the barn that would have been used if it was needed.

Golden Hour at Barns & Yard

There are so many interesting spaces at Barns and Yard for couple portraits, they have a wildflower meadow, a lovely bridge, a lake, woodland and a lush green field that we used for golden hour portraits of Emily, Dafydd and their dog, Walter, we were really spoilt for choice! I’m always hopeful that we’ll get some amazing golden light on a wedding day, it’s never guaranteed so when we get it I’m like a kid in a sweet shop! I especially wanted it for Emily and Dafydd’s wedding because Emily has the most incredible hair, it looks like fire! I knew it was going to look absolutely amazing in golden light and I was right! We did some lovely couple portraits earlier in the day however my favourites were after their speeches when we headed back out to get a few in golden hour, especially when their dog joined in!

“I had followed Lisa on Instagram for some time so I knew I wanted Lisa to be our photographer before my husband even proposed. I even messaged her to check she was available before confirming the date with our venue! We both loved her style and felt it was exactly what we wanted for our day. Catching those special moments in a relaxed and charming way.

Lisa was always very friendly and helpful during the preparations and was almost as excited about our little dog being at the day as we were!

We got married in September 2021 and on the day, she was incredible. Obviously, there are nerves on the morning of the wedding but she helped keep the vibe calm and relaxed. She knew all the timing, checked things were running smoothly and she even stepped in to help when my bridesmaid was so nervous, and her hands were shaking so much, she couldn’t do up the buttons on my dress!

The photographs she has taken are simply amazing. They are charming, beautifully thoughtful and truly capture the essence of our day. We wanted a relaxed homely feel, not to stand around for hours for staged photos but to live in the moment, and these photos are so full of that life and love. It makes me smile even thinking about them. Even the group photos, of which we did have a few, are not stuffy and formal but full of magic.

My husband was a little unsure about the couples portraits but we basically forgot the camera was there. We were laughing so much with Lisa initially felt really relaxed and and then we were able to have our moment as just the two of us walking through some fields, having a cuddle together, talking excitedly and generally soaking up the love on our day. Genuinely, the couple portraits were one of the best parts of our day. Our time to be together and have a moment to be giddy, and the photos show that beautifully.

Lisa was able to get some stunning shots without directing us too much and then sort of just melted into the background to document all those amazing moments we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. She was brilliant with our guests, worked really well with the other suppliers and got some amazing shot of our little dog too!

Lisa is a dream and the photos we have are incredible. Her work really speaks for itself but, both in the build up and on the day, she was an absolute hero and it was easily the best decision we made to have her photograph our day. We will cherish these photos for our whole lives and will forever be grateful. Do not let the opportunity to book Lisa pass you by.”

Thank you so much Emily & Dafydd for choosing me to photograph your wedding! If you’re planning a wedding at Barns and Yard and still need a wedding photographer, then get in touch, I’d love to be there to photograph your day!
