If there’s one thing I’m always banging on about, it’s how much I LOVE engagement shoots. They’re a great way for us to get to know each other before your wedding, you guys get to practice in front of the camera and you get some lovely images of you together. I met Jenny and Tom at Apley Woods in Shropshire to do their engagement shoot ahead of their wedding in April. After speaking to them via email for quite a while I was pretty sure I was really going to get on really well with them, and it turns out I was 100% correct!
Getting to know you before the big day
We don’t spend the entire engagement shoot just taking pictures, we have a good walk round and a chat about your day and just general life stuff. Jenny and Tom are getting married at The Cowshed which I’ve shot at a couple of times before and absolutely love. There is a woodland area at their venue which we will hopefully be using so Apley Woods seemed like a great spot for a bit of a practice before the real deal. When I shoot couples I try out different poses and different prompts to try and make you laugh and connect with each other. Not every pose and prompt works for all couples so engagement shoots work really well for me to find out what makes you guys laugh. Usually for this bit I just have to act like a bit of a dick and it usually gets laughter as a reaction.
Engagement Shoot at Apley Woods
Okay, I’m not going to lie, for the first 10 minutes of an engagement shoot it’s probably the most awkward thing ever. You and your partner most likely aren’t used to having your photograph taken by someone who, until 10 minutes ago was almost a total stranger. I’ve had a few couple shoots myself with my husband over the years just to feel exactly what it is that I’m putting my couples through to get some nice snaps of them. And oh yeah, the first 10 minutes are always kind of awkward. Before the shoot itself I’m always super nervous, which I know sounds utterly ridiculous seeing as I take photos of people all the time, being on the other side of the camera is WAY outside my comfort zone. After 10 minutes of being shot I LOVED it, I basically just got to hug Luke and laugh a lot, two of my favourite things to do. So believe me guys, I’ve been there, and I promise after about 10 minutes, you’re going to love it and have the best time. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at these happy faces…
