What to Wear for Your Engagement Shoot

Your engagement shoot is really just an excuse to spend an hour together, somewhere lovely, doing what you do best, being you. It’s just you two, being yourselves, somewhere beautiful. But what you wear does matter, because the right outfit helps you feel confident, comfortable, and completely at ease in front of the camera. And when you feel like you, that’s when the magic happens.

So here’s my honest guide to getting it right.

Coordinate, don’t match. You’re not twins, you’re a couple. Pick a loose colour palette of two or three tones that feel cohesive together, and let each of you dress in a way that feels true to your own style. Earthy neutrals, soft pastels, deep jewel tones, whatever fits the setting and the season. You’ll look like you belong together without looking like a uniform.

Dress for where you’re going. Shrewsbury’s cobbled streets call for something different than a countryside field or a woodland path. Think about the backdrop, the light, the season. Flowy layers for outdoor shoots, something a little more tailored for city settings.

Comfort is everything. If you’re tugging, fidgeting, or can’t forget what you’re wearing, it will show. Your photos should feel like you, relaxed, laughing, lost in each other. That only happens when you’re comfortable in your own skin. Wear fabrics that breathe. Wear things you’ve actually worn before.

Bring two outfits if you can. One a little more dressed up, one more everyday and relaxed. It gives your gallery variety, and honestly, the casual shots are often my favourites, they tend to feel the most real.

Think timeless, not trendy. Trends fade. These photos won’t. Classic silhouettes and simple colours will always look right when you’re flicking back through these images in 20 years.

Keep accessories simple. A meaningful necklace, a favourite watch, lovely. But let your faces, your joy, your connection be the thing that draws the eye. That’s what people will remember.

If you’re unsure where to start, send me a message. I’m always happy to chat through ideas before your shoot, it’s all part of the process.
