There’s something truly special about photographing a couple in the lead-up to their wedding, the excitement, the anticipation, and those quiet little moments that remind you why they’re saying “I do” in the first place. Deva and John’s engagement session in Shrewsbury was one of those sessions that had me smiling the whole way through. We spent the evening wandering through some of my favourite spots in town, chasing that dreamy golden hour light and capturing their love story just as it is, relaxed, joyful, and full of laughter.

If you’ve seen their beautiful wedding at Soudley Meadow, you’ll know that these two have the warmest connection. This shoot was the perfect chance for them to slow down before the big day and enjoy being together, and for me, as their Shrewsbury wedding photographer, it was a wonderful way to get them comfortable in front of the camera ahead of the celebrations.
Exploring Shrewsbury at Golden Hour
We started their engagement session in The Quarry, Shrewsbury’s gorgeous riverside park. It’s always a favourite location of mine, the mix of open green spaces, tree-lined paths, and views of the River Severn make it a dream backdrop for couples’ photos. As the sun began to dip, the light turned soft and golden, wrapping Deva and John in the most beautiful glow. They laughed, strolled hand in hand, and completely forgot the camera was even there, which is exactly how I love my sessions to feel.
From there, we wandered through the cobbled streets towards The Bear Steps, one of Shrewsbury’s most charming historic corners. With its timber-framed buildings and tucked-away lanes, it added a completely different vibe to the gallery, a little more urban and architectural, but still so romantic. It’s one of the reasons I adore engagement shoots in Shrewsbury: there’s such a variety of beautiful backdrops all within walking distance.
Why I Love Engagement Sessions
Engagement sessions are about more than just pretty photos (though you’ll definitely get those too!). They’re a chance for us to get to know each other before the wedding, for you to see how I work, and for you to feel completely relaxed in front of the camera. By the time your wedding day comes around, it’ll feel like we’re old friends, and that always shows in the photos.
Deva and John’s session was the perfect example of that. By the time their wedding day rolled around, they were naturals, and we created some of my favourite images ever.
If you’re recently engaged and looking for a Shrewsbury wedding photographer who’ll capture your love story in a relaxed, natural way, I’d love to chat. Whether it’s a golden hour engagement session like this one or a full wedding celebration, my approach is all about telling your story honestly and beautifully.
