A Joyful, Colourful Celebration – Nicky & Sam’s Summer Wedding at The Citadel

The Citadel Wedding

There’s something truly special about summer weddings, the light, the colours, and the relaxed, joyful atmosphere that seems to fill the whole day. Nicky and Sam’s wedding in June 2023 was exactly that. Full of love, laughter, and vibrant touches, their day was a beautiful celebration surrounded by family and friends, and made even more special by the presence of their two children, who played such an important part in the day.

I always love photographing weddings at The Citadel in Weston under Redcastle. It’s one of Shropshire’s most picturesque venues, with sweeping countryside views and a romantic, timeless feel that’s perfect for a summer celebration. Nicky and Sam’s day captured all of that and more.

A Relaxed Morning and a Church Ceremony

The day began with a calm and happy morning at home as Nicky got ready with the help of Studio 13 Shifnal, who created a beautiful hair and makeup look that felt perfectly natural and timeless. Nicky wore a stunning gown from Shropshire Country Brides, while Sam and the groomsmen looked sharp in suits from Charlie Browns and Peter Posh.

Once everyone was ready, it was time to head to Rowton Church for the ceremony. Arriving in style thanks to Finishing Touch Cars, Nicky walked down the aisle to meet Sam, surrounded by the love and support of their family, with a few sweet moments from their children that had everyone smiling. The ceremony was heartfelt and full of emotion, the perfect way to begin their new chapter together.

Celebrations at The Citadel

After confetti and congratulations outside the church, everyone made their way to The Citadel, where the celebrations truly began. I adore photographing here, the views, gardens and character of the venue offer endless opportunities for beautiful, relaxed images, and it was the perfect setting for a summer party.

The reception space was beautifully styled by Tipples, filled with colour and personality, and bright summer florals by Julie Nicholas Florist brought everything to life. Guests enjoyed drinks and canapés in the sunshine before sitting down to a delicious wedding breakfast at 4pm.

Before the meal, speeches had everyone laughing and tearing up in equal measure, and the stunning cake was cut shortly afterwards, a sweet moment that always feels like the start of the evening’s celebrations.

Dancing into the Night

As the sun began to set over the Shropshire countryside, the evening party kicked off with a first dance around 8pm, a magical moment that marked the start of a fun-filled night on the dance floor. The talented Matt Strafford provided the music, creating the perfect soundtrack to a celebration that was joyful, relaxed, and full of love from beginning to end.
